What kind of courage does it take to stand up for something you believe in?

Teacher Menu Esther Forbes was most well-known as an author of historical novels for adults. In 1942 she won a Pulitzer Prize in history for her adult book Paul Revere and the World He Lived In. It was the research Forbes did for that book that led to her interest in the lives of apprentices in eighteenth century Boston. When she discovered that it was a horse boy who brought word to Paul Revere that the British were ready to march out of Boston one evening in April of 1775, the incident stayed with Forbes and evolved into Johnny Tremain. Now considered a classic, Johnny Tremain won the Newbury Medal in 1943. Esther Forbes is also the author of the young people's book America's Paul Revere. She was born in 1891 and died in 1967.
