The author, Carolyn Reeder, is a teacher and a history buff.  Her interest in the Civil War was piqued by a vacation spent visiting the battlefields at Antietam, Gettysburg, and New Market.   After visiting the local museums in the Shenandoah Valley and the Virginia Piedmont, she read firsthand accounts of the war's effect on local citizens.  The book Shades of Gray grew out of these experiences.
